Taxes
The City of Williamsburg offers the lowest real estate tax ($0.54 per $100 of assessed value) of all Virginia's cities. Other local business taxes are collected by the Commissioner of the Revenue and the Finance Department.
In Virginia, sales tax is collected at both the state and local level. Localities in Virginia receive 1% of the 5% statewide sales tax rate. The remaining 4% of the sales tax is retained at the state level. On sales of eligible food items, Virginia has a tax rate of 2.5%, with the state receiving 1.5% and the locality receiving 1%.
