The U.S. Department of Labor oversees the unemployment insurance system created by the Social Security Act of 1935. The system seeks to alleviate hardship for the unemployed, prevent unemployment, and promote reemployment. Workers' compensation insurance provides compensation and medical benefits to workers or their dependents if the workers become disabled, are injured, or die from accidental injury or disease inflicted from their employment.
