How to Support City Businesses During COVID-19

City launches website linking shoppers to businesses

Post Date:03/25/2020 4:26 PM

In an effort to promote and support local businesses adversely affected by COVID-19, the City of Williamsburg launched a website (www.williamsburgva.gov/supportlocal) to connect customers with city businesses allowing them to continue to buy local. The site allows customers to search local businesses by map, name and business category. City businesses promote their product (gifts, clothes, shoes, supplies, etc.), or services (virtual meetings, online services, etc.) and share how they are selling their product (carry out, delivery, mail, etc.).

“On their own, City businesses have found remarkably creative ways to market and sell to customers during this COVID-19 outbreak. We thank them for that and applaud their entrepreneurship, and we want to do all we can to help them maximize their reach through this website, while helping our residents maintain safe access to the products and services they need,” says Mayor Paul Freiling. Michele Mixner DeWitt, the City’s Director of Economic Development, added, “As businesses send us the information, we will post it on the site. The City created this portal to help our businesses reach customers during this time and provide one-stop-shopping for customers.”

Noting several requests on social media and throughout the community as to, “How can I help local businesses?” this website provides an answer. “The resiliency of our businesses is extraordinary,” says DeWitt. “We encourage customers to continue to shop locally in support of our businesses.”
